Villa Park is a small city with big lots. Most of its homes went up in the 1960s and 70s on generous parcels, set well back from the street, and that layout has a consequence nobody sees: the sewer lateral from the house to the city main is a long run of pipe.
On a recent Villa Park job, that run measured 98.7 feet of cable from the access point to the city tap. That is a lot of pipe, a lot of joints, and a lot of ground for a homeowner to be responsible for without ever having looked inside it.
Why the Lateral Is Longer Than You Think
The lateral does not stop at the property line. It runs under the front yard, under the parkway, and out under the street to where it connects with the city’s main line — the tap. In most cities, that entire length belongs to the property owner, including the stretch under the asphalt.
A deep setback adds footage before the pipe even reaches the sidewalk. Every extra length of pipe means more joints, and joints are where laterals age: where roots find a way in, where sections settle out of line, and where a line that drains fine today starts holding water tomorrow.
What the Scope Covers
We feed the camera into the lateral at the access point and run it the full length, out to the tap. You watch the live feed with us, and we narrate as we go — pipe material, condition at each joint, and anything that does not belong. The footage counter runs the whole way.
Most laterals take 20 to 40 minutes, depending on length and access. You get a verbal walkthrough on site before we pack up, and a written PDF report with the full video emailed the same day.
Finding the City Tap
A scope tells you what the pipe looks like. A locate tells you where it is. On a long Villa Park lateral, the location that matters most is the very end — the point where your line meets the city main.
Once the camera reaches the tap, we find its signal from above and mark the spot on the surface. On this job, the locator itself went down in the street as the mark, right over the tap.
Knowing where the tap sits is worth more than it sounds:
- It settles whose problem it is. A defect at 40 feet is under your yard. A defect at the tap is at the connection with the city’s line. That difference shapes who you call and what gets quoted.
- It makes repair quotes honest. A contractor who knows the length of the run and where it ends in the street can bid the actual job instead of padding for unknowns.
- It matters for permits. Villa Park requires a permit before anyone installs or works on a sewer lateral. Work in the street is a bigger undertaking than work in the yard, and it helps to know which one you are facing before the paperwork starts.
Distance, Not Depth
Every location in a FlowPro report is given as cable distance from the access point plus a mark on the surface. You will not see a depth figure, and that is deliberate.
Cable distance is counted off the reel as the camera travels. It is the same number today and next year. A depth reading comes from a locator picking up the camera’s signal, and it moves with soil, moisture and how the locator is held. Publish a depth and you hand whoever digs a number to argue with. Footage plus a surface mark is enough to find the spot, and it is honest about what the equipment can tell you.
We do not sell you the repair. FlowPro OC runs the camera, locates the line and writes the report. We do not do excavation or repairs, and we take no referral fee from whoever does. Nothing in a FlowPro report is written to sell you work.
When to Schedule One in Villa Park
- You are in escrow — a general home inspection does not include the sewer lateral
- Drains slow, clear, and slow again within a few months
- Gurgling from drains or toilets when water runs elsewhere in the house
- A damp or unusually green patch in the yard or parkway
- The house dates from the 1960s or 70s and the lateral has never been looked at
- You are planning hardscape, a pool or a driveway replacement and want to know where the line runs first
