Yorba Linda has some of the largest residential lots in North Orange County, and that is precisely what makes digging here risky. A house set well back from the street has a sewer lateral covering serious distance to reach the main, and a run that long almost never travels in a straight line.
Nobody hands a homeowner a map of their own lateral. County records describe what was permitted above ground far better than what was buried underneath it, and on properties that have been added onto, re-plumbed, or rebuilt, the paperwork and the pipe stopped matching a long time ago.
Electronic locating settles it. We trace the line and paint the route on the ground, and the guessing stops. Call 714-992-6363 to schedule.
Why Yorba Linda Properties Are Harder Than Most
The city is a mix of eras. The older ranch properties date to well before the master-planned developments arrived, and many sit on deep parcels with outbuildings, stables, and equestrian access that were all worked around when the drainage went in. The newer tracts are more predictable, but "more predictable" is not the same as documented.
Three things push a lateral off the route you would guess:
- Distance. A long run bends around whatever was already in the ground when it was installed — footings, trees, hardscape, older utilities.
- Additions and remodels. New bathrooms and extensions bring new drainage, and the new run rarely follows the old one.
- Slope. Yorba Linda's foothill lots are not flat. A lateral has to hold fall across changing grade, and the route that achieves it is often not the shortest one.
How the Trace Works
We send a transmitting sonde into the line and follow it from the surface with a handheld receiver. The receiver reads the signal below it, and the operator works across the yard until the reading peaks. That peak sits directly over the pipe. We mark it, move along the run, and repeat until the route is laid out in paint across the property.
We also report the cable footage from the access point. That is the number that lets a camera finding become a physical spot in your yard — the scope reports a defect at a given footage, and the locate turns that footage into a mark you can stand on.
Worth knowing: a locate and a scope answer different questions. The camera tells you the condition of the pipe. The locate tells you where the pipe is. Run both in one visit and you have the whole picture rather than half of it.
When Locating Pays for Itself
- ADUs, additions, and new slabs. A lateral running under a fresh foundation is not something you correct later without demolition.
- Pools, spas, and deep landscaping. An excavator moves faster than anyone can react. Paint marks are the safeguard.
- Driveways, patios, and hardscape. Permanent surface over an unmarked line makes the next repair dramatically more expensive.
- Targeting a known defect. One deliberate hole instead of an exploratory trench across the front lawn.
- Buying an older property. Where the lateral runs is worth knowing alongside what condition it is in.
What You Walk Away With
Surface marks showing the route across your property, plus the cable footage to the points that matter. When we pair the locate with a camera inspection, you also get an on-site walkthrough in plain language and a detailed PDF report emailed the same day — documentation you can hand a contractor or keep for the file.
One thing worth saying plainly: we do not perform the repair work on lines we inspect, and we take no referral fees in either direction. What we tell you about your line is not a lead-in to a quote. That independence is the entire point of hiring an inspection company rather than a company that sells trenching.
